PDF to PDF/A Converter

PDF/A is a family of PDF standards designed for long-term document preservation. The current PrivatePDF tool updates basic document metadata and saves a PDF; it does not establish or validate PDF/A conformance. A filename ending in _pdfa.pdf is not proof of compliance. If an archive requires PDF/A, use a dedicated standards-aware converter and validate the document against the required profile.

How to Convert PDF to PDF/A

  1. Upload one supported PDF file using the existing upload area.
  2. Choose Convert to PDF/A to run the existing metadata-update operation. Sign in if prompted. There is no PDF/A version or conformance-level selector.
  3. Download the resulting PDF, whose filename ends in _pdfa.pdf. The operation does not establish PDF/A compliance; use a dedicated converter and independent validation if archival conformance is required.

The Free plan includes 10 PDF jobs per month, shared across PrivatePDF tools. An account is required to start the operation, and each completed operation counts as one job. Free use is not unlimited. Processing runs locally in your browser.

Why Convert PDF to PDF/A?

Standards-compliant PDF/A documents can support long-term preservation, document archiving, and institutional record keeping. Different archives require different profiles and checks. A successful file download does not automatically satisfy those requirements, and the current tool’s metadata-only operation does not create verified archival conformance.

PDF/A Standards and Compliance

No specific PDF/A version or conformance level is verified as supported by this tool. It changes basic PDF metadata and saves the file; it is not a PDF/A compliance validator. Neither the output filename nor a compliance label in its metadata certifies the document. If conformance is required, use a dedicated PDF/A converter, validate the result independently, and confirm your archive’s requirements.

PDF to PDF/A FAQ

What is PDF/A?

PDF/A is a family of standards for long-term preservation of PDF documents. Its requirements restrict features and dependencies that can prevent reliable future reproduction. An ordinary PDF filename or descriptive metadata does not establish PDF/A conformance.

How do I convert a PDF to PDF/A?

For confirmed PDF/A output, use a converter that implements your required archival profile and validate the result. On this page, uploading a PDF, starting the existing operation, and downloading the result only updates basic metadata and saves a PDF; it does not establish PDF/A conformance.

Can I convert PDF to PDF/A online for free?

You can use the current tool online within the Free plan’s 10 PDF jobs per month, shared across PrivatePDF tools. An account is required, and each completed operation uses one job. This allowance does not make the metadata-only output verified PDF/A; free use is not unlimited.

What is the difference between PDF and PDF/A?

PDF is a general document format. PDF/A adds archival requirements intended to support long-term reproduction. Both use the .pdf extension, so a file’s extension or name cannot tell you whether it satisfies an archival profile.

Does converting a PDF to PDF/A guarantee compliance?

No. The current operation does not implement or validate a confirmed PDF/A profile. A successful download or a compliance label in the file’s metadata is not certification. Use an independent validator for the required profile and check any additional institutional archival requirements.
